The Open API Revolution. Survival of the Crawlable.

The Open API Revolution is the third great technology shift. The internet asked: do you have a website? Open source asked: are you building on open infrastructure? The Open API Revolution asks: is your product crawlable? Can an AI agent find you, connect to you, and act through you? The context window is the new search index. When an agent operates on your behalf — booking, ordering, filing — it does not search and present options. It calls services available in its context window and acts. If you are not in that context window, you do not exist. The MCP protocol grew from 1,200 public servers in Q1 2025 to 9,400+ in April 2026. 78% of enterprise AI teams have at least one MCP-backed agent in production. Stripe launched Link — a digital wallet AI agents can use to shop, pay, and transact. Swiggy launched Builders Club with 3 MCP servers and 18+ API tools, plus llms.txt at the domain root. GSMA Open Gateway: 73 operator groups, 285 networks, 80% of global mobile subscribers — unlocking an estimated $300B opportunity. The Crawlability Stack has four layers: Layer 1 Discoverable (API docs only — already behind), Layer 2 Connectable (MCP server — the 2026 baseline), Layer 3 Composable (orchestration layer for multi-step agent workflows — value concentrates here), Layer 4 Training Data (proprietary data AI models need — the long game). New pricing models: inference fees (per API call), agentic revenue share (cut of agent-executed transactions), training data licensing, and crawl credits. India paradox: best public API infrastructure in the world (UPI 18B+ transactions/month, Aadhaar 1.4B authentications, GSTN 14M businesses, ONDC) — and near-zero enterprise MCP readiness. Swiggy is the exception. The company that builds MCP layers on top of UPI, GSTN, and Aadhaar will be worth more than most current Indian SaaS companies combined. Action by role: SaaS founders — ship an MCP server (P0, not future). Enterprise sales — sell crawlability not integrations. CIOs — audit vendor MCP readiness, make it a renewal clause.
